Karl Taro Greenfeld’s Triburbia

From Sarah:  Dry and smart humor paired with a character driven story, Karl Taro Greenfeld’s Triburbia is a scream. Following the lives of several families that live in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood, you get an insiders view of the complicated and eccentric lives of the new traditional American family.

The adults is the novel, who would normally characterized as “yuppies,” are the central focus as we see them deal with wealth, ambition, sex and raising kids in NYC. Trying to shelter their kids from the harshness of the world, we see the adults enjoy the deepest pleasures of life. This juxtaposition between privilege and family life is what I found most compelling.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book with its rich characters and social commentary of the artistic upper middle class. It’s hard to find well written fiction with such dynamic characters, but Greenfeld is successful in telling a compelling story with dynamic character development.
